Five Ways Coffee Is Actually Good For You

If you’ve ever visited our boutique in Fulham you may have noticed our fancy coffee machine on the counter, we at Manuka Life are big coffee lovers despite many people thinking a healthy lifestyle and a caffeine addiction are mutually exclusive. While there are obviously some negative health effects from over-consumption of caffeine, the good news is that in moderation it can actually be more beneficial than bad for you (yay).

1. It keeps you alert.
Let’s start with the obvious, everyone knows caffeine’s most celebrated benefit is it’s ability to keep you awake. Coffee is best in the mornings when you’re feeling a bit groggy and need a pick-me-up before work, caffeine is the most commonly used psychoactive substance in the world giving you more energy and enhancing the brain’s ability to function.

2. It can help improve memory.
If you’re a forgetful person with information constantly falling out of your head, a cup can actually help you to retain information. As just mentioned, caffeine in moderation helps to improve your brain’s function with increased firing of neurons; this means you have quicker reactions and even improved hearing (the part where messages reach your brain rather than when they are received in the ear). In a study of this it also found no correlation between increased caffeine consumption and anxiety or impaired motor performance, not to say those things definitely aren’t linked as I’m sure there are more studies who go into more detail about that but it’s interesting to note.

3. It reduces your risk of getting ill.
Caffeine is actually great for your immune system and filled with antioxidants, having a strong immune system is obviously great for your overall health but as well as this it’s beneficial for so many other health problems. It could help prevent or slow down the development of loads of different cancerscataractsalzheimersfatty liver diseasetinnituskidney stonestype 2 diabetesheart diseasestrokes etc. the list goes on and on. I’m feeling pretty healthy holding my latte right now especially considering this huge study, which found drinking coffee was associated with a 20% lower risk of death in men and a 26% lower risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years.

4. It fights depression.
As well as your physical health, coffee gives your mental health a boost too. This study found that women who drank four or more cups per day had a 20% lower risk of becoming depressed this could be because of it’s link to mood-boosting hormone seratonin, and this one found people of any gender who drank four or more cups per day were 53% less likely to commit suicide. So there you go, coffee is something worth living for.

5. It helps your gym workout.
Yes, coffee can help you burn fat. Caffeine helps release fatty acids from fat tissues and burn them for energy, this has an extra boost when combined with exercise as it also releases adrenaline and makes you more likely to do those few extra reps or push yourself a little bit harder on the cross-trainer. So a cup or two before your gym session is definitely a good idea and has proven to improve physical performance by up to 11-12% which is pretty impressive.

I know coffee is starting to sound a bit like a superfood at this point but the thing you want to bear in mind is this is all good within moderation, the definition of “moderation” is pretty contested, varying between one and five cups a day depending on who you ask. There is also evidence against saying coffee is actually good for you, especially if you’re the type to buy a double shot grande mocha triple vanilla no-foam latte with extra cream (Not even sure if that’s a real drink or just some Starbucks words thrown together). The key with any healthy eating/drinking is keeping it simple, coffee, hot water and milk is all you need to reap the delicious benefits.
