Manuka Matters Book Club: 26 Grains
You may not have heard of 26 Grains, a pop-up and soon to be permanent café at Neal’s Yard in London but we have a feeling this cult brand will make a big name for themselves in no time. Founded by porridge enthusiast, Alex Hely-Hutchinson, as a small kiosk in Old Street station, 26 Grains has grown to open their first ever permanent space this month along with an eponymous cook book. Alex was inspired by her time spent in Copenhagen and the Danish use of grains, especially in porridge and uses these newly-inspired Danish principles in making delicious, nutritious recipes.
Today the 26 Grains café stands in Covent Garden, London and serves many of Alex’s favourite recipes, catering to breakfasts and lunches for many busy commuters and tourists. We have become obsessed with the accompanying cookbook, which has a dedicated section explaining each grain used throughout in glorious detail. Get ready to become a grain expert, just from reading through the introduction of the 26 Grains cookbook it’s very easy to become as passionate as Alex is about the multiple health benefits from each one.
After getting to grips with each grain, there is a huge variety of recipes, from breakfast porridges to dinner and snacks, including a lot of recipes you wouldn’t normally think to use a grain in. As far as recipe books go, 26 Grains is far more educational than most, able to change the way you think about the way you use grains and the way you put meals together. Some of our favourites include Tomato Coconut Rice with Halloumi and Avocado, Seared Tuna and Black Quinoa Salad and Spelt and Parsley Waffles with Chilli Beans as well as classics like Blueberry Porridge and Buckwheat Tabbouleh.
The photos are also so beautiful, all shot by Alex’s sister and really add to the Scandi charm of the book. Overall the recipes are super simple and easy to follow. They exclusively use good, wholesome ingredients, no faddy diet products and make for really family-friendly, delicious meals. There’s even a section of treats at the back, including oat milk popsicles which we can’t wait to try out.
